About Soul Medicine VAR

Our mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of Australian Defence Force (ADF) members and veterans Australia-wide by providing high-quality, veteran-led psychiatric care that is supportive, accessible and evidence-based.

WHAT WE DO

Our psychiatrists use telehealth appointments to provide mental health assessments and evidence-based treatment where needed to current and former service personnel.

Through secure telehealth, we provide Australia-wide access to high-quality mental health care, ensuring veterans and serving members can receive support wherever they are, in the comfort and privacy of their own home.

BACKGROUND

Soul Medicine VAR was founded by Dr Rory Morris-Butler, MBBS, MRCPsych, FRANZCP, a psychiatrist and former British Army Medical Officer.

Dr Morris-Butler’s military career began in 1991 as a Parachute Regiment recruit; however, an injury during basic training ended his training. He completed his Combat Infantry Course with the 4th Battalion Parachute 2

Regiment (4 PARA) of the British Army in 2000; however, another injury during his time as a reserve prevented him from earning a maroon beret or wings.

Moving away from combat service, Dr Morris-Butler rejoined the Regular Army in 2006 as a Medical Cadet and served in multiple roles during his 12 years of military service, including deployment to Afghanistan to FOB (Forward Operating Base)with the Fusiliers, deployment to Canada with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) and serving as a General Duties Medical Officer with the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) 5th Medical Regiment.

Following his military career, Dr Morris-Butler relocated to Australia in 2018 to finish his psychiatry training. He has since worked across diverse regions, including Sydney, Canberra, Perth, the East Kimberley and the Goldfields, developing expertise in complex and rural mental health.

Since 2002, Dr Morris-Butler has specialised in DVA Initial Liability Claims andPermanent Impairment assessments. He has extensive knowledge and expertise in the DVA Statements of Principles used to determine claims.

Dr Morris-Butler’s military insight and psychiatric expertise underpin his approach to veteran mental health care. Under his leadership, Soul Medicine VAR has supported over 2,500 serving ADF members and veterans
